Dr. Shima Sokol is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. Although she is new to the Trokhan Group, she has known Drs Trokhan since college. Dr. Sokol is a graduate of Princeton University, where in addition to her outstanding academic credentials, she excelled in both swimming and water polo, earning All-American and All-Ivy Academic Honors. Her dedication to swimming and water polo would later inspire her to pursue a career in Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Sokol attended medical school at the University of California at Davis and was selected as a member of the prestigious “Alpha Omega Alpha” Honor Society. She completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Following residency, she completed a rigorous fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of California in Davis with Dr. Robert Szabo, one of the countryʼs leading hand surgeons. As a fellow, she did research on the surgical ﬁxation of distal radius fractures. Her research results were presented at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) Conference in 2010. Dr. Sokol has published articles on ﬂexor tendon repairs and distal radius fractures.
Dr. Sokol believes in treating her patients like family. At each visit, she takes her time getting to know the patient, both from an orthopaedic and personal standpoint. She is conservative with her managment patientsʼ orthopaedic issues and only considers surgery after pursuing all non-operative measures. As a hand surgeon, she has particular interest in the management of carpal tunnel and other nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytrenʼs disease, arthritis, fractures, sports-related and overuse injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Dr. Sokol is one of only a handful of surgeons trained in the use of XIAFLEX® (collagenase clostridium histolyticum), which has been shown to be useful for Dupuytrenʼs contraction as an alternative to surgery.
Dr. Sokol is afﬁlated with Holy Name Medical Center, Hudson Crossing Surgery Center & Rockland Bergen Surgery Center. She is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and American Acadamy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
